The UAAP Cheerdance Competition is one of the most awaited event for many students of the UAAP schools. And it happened last Sunday at Araneta. They cheered, they dance and they had fun all afternoon. And at the end, only one team was declared the champs. And obviously, it is the UP Pep Squad who went home with the prize and the honor of being the best among the rest. My reaction: I’m happy that we won. To be honest, hindi na ako masyadong kinabahan after watching the performance. Pero may konting disappointment lang para sa mga teams na naging magaling din yesterday. And I’m talking about AdU and ADMU, who I thought deserve to have gotten one of the three top places. I know FEU was also a contender and I am not shocked to see them win third place once again. Pero I think na medyo may pulitikang pinatakbo with what happened to UST. Their routine sucked big time. Even cousins and friends who are into cheerleading said the same thing. Pero by the time their name was announced, medyo gulat kaming lahat. Nothing against UST kasi I admit that they’ve had their time sa competition, but this year definitely is not one of them. UP won, but I think AdU and ADMU should have also won. Applause to those two teams!

It ends here…

August 26, 2008

Though UP won in blow-out fashion against the AdU Falcons last Thursday, it’s very sad that the Fighting Maroons season ended last Sunday after losing to ADMU Eagles, finally deciding their fate for the Season 71 of the UAAP men’s basketball tourney. Maraming nagsasabi na it was definitely a big improvement in UP’s part already winning 3 games after the winless record last year. Pero for an alumnus like me, it’s still very sad kasi antagal ko nang hinihintay na makapasok ang UP sa Final 4. Pero I guess I just have to wait one more year for this to happen. Sana naman, next year ayus na…

For the mean time, yung cheerdance competition na lang muna yung hihintayin ko…

Hay Sa Wakas!

Nanalo ulit ang UP Maroons yesterday. Not that may bearing pa yung game, at least hindi na kulelat. Sana next year mas maayos na.

Yup, UP Fighting Maroons finally got their second win, as they beat the Adamson University Bulldogs, 76-68. Medyo kinakabahan na nga ako kasi iniisip ko na una’t huling panalo na yung sa NU. Pero buti na lang nag-perform nang maayos halos lahat ng Maroons kaya naman nakuha yung second na panalo. I don’t wanna jinx it pero I think nasa Araneta yung swerte ng UP kasi their only two wins are played in The Big Dome. Wag naman sana kasi mukhang wala nang scheduled game dun, hehe… UP FIGHT!!! Fight harder!!!

Hand-check Time

July 15, 2008

I know this hand-check rule in basketball, which is also being implemented on UAAP, is something that aims to further enhance the game and the skills of players. But from what I’ve been seeing in the past few games of UAAP, this just made game play slow and boring because of too much calls. So instead of having an action-packed 2-hour game, we are stuck with a boring 2-and-a-half-hour foul-laden match. And one other thing, referees have to be consistent with their calls. Because as far as I can see it, they have a certain bias for the teams that are favored to win. If this thing is not gonna be implemented correctly, might as well scratch it off the rule book instead.

I just don’t get what the big deal is when ADMU and DLSU play each other on basketball. It’s not like their games are real basketball classics. Okay, I’ll admit that some of it are nail-biting, but not all. Just like the last few ones where both teams just sucked big time. It’s like watching little kids play kanto-kanto B-ball, especially yesterday. I was watching the damn game on TV and I didn’t really saw anything that is worth all the excitement for. They kept throwing the ball away, committing turnovers after another and pretty much sucking on the shooting department. Scoring also was horrible for both teams, which usually can be attributed to the other team’s defense, but not this one. Plain and simple, both teams blew big time. That is why I still don’t get what the hype is all about. And what’s with the rivalry that already goes beyond basketball. That is really, to me, the only place those two schools have been having their grudge, and not in other fields where they claim that they are the best. Basketball – THAT’S IT!!!

Back on Track

July 7, 2008

After a very disappointing Season 70, the UP Fighting Maroons are back to their winning ways as they crushed the NU Bulldogs yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum. It was such a breath of fresh air to me, a UP alumnus and Maroons fan seeing the boys back to their winning form. I have never seen UP played this good since that 2006, I think, when the team came back winning 6 straight games as the season elimination round came to its close. Sana lang tuluy-tuloy na. Go Maroons! UP FIGHT!!!
